Waitsworld
Required reading: Tom Waits’s interview with himself, included in the recent issue of Hot Press. Here at the Revelatorium, we’re contemplating spooning a tunnel under the Phoenix Park after dark, as it seems to be the only possibility of gaining entry to the Rat Cellar shows later this month. To celebrate, or console, here’s a handful of reviews from the archives:Mule Variations, 1999, Real Gone, 2005, Orphans – Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards 2006. Tom’s conversation with Jim Jarmusch, plus accompanying photographs, originally printed in the jazz periodical Straight, No Chaser around the time of Bone Machine (and included in the Innocent When You Dream anthology a couple of years ago) is one of our all time favourite interviews. There’s a text-only version online at:http://www.geocities.com/soho/7587/jarmush.html. Also well worth a look is a Spin feature entitled ‘The Music Of Chance’, written by Mark Richard, author of the beautiful short story collection The Ice at the Bottom of the World. It can be found at:http://www.tomwaitslibrary.com/interviews.html Scroll down on the left until you hit 1994. And in case you’re one of the few Tom devotees who hasn’t seen it, here’s the already-legendary Glitter And Doom tour press conference.
