Choice Music Prize Tonight!
If you don’t know the Choice Music Prize takes place tonight you better have an excuse along the lines of having been off hunting for water on Titan, opals on Venus or at least decent pint of beer in Dublin.*
Anyway, yaddah yeah…tonight in Vicar Street, twelve judges will decide who wins the coveted prize for best Irish album of 2008. The contenders are:
Fight Like Apes “Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion”
Mick Flannery “White Lies”
Halfset “Another Way of Being There”
Lisa Hannigan “Sea Sew”
David Holmes “The Holy Pictures”
Jape “Ritual”
Messiah J & The Expert “From The Word Go”
Oppenheimer “Take The Whole Mid-Range And Boost It”
R.S.A.G. “Organic Sampler”
The Fucking Script “The Script”
*sulk* I had a whole plan to go along under the premise of snapping, having stolen The Vinny Club‘s muscleman suit to smuggle in under my photographer clothes so I could storm the stage during one of the dreadfully boring performances in order to douse phosphorescent lighter fuel across my cleverly-bulkier person whilst roaring “ADEBISI SHANK“ to be ejected, screaming and vindicated to St James’ Hospital burns unit. But I’m not arsed. I have better things to do tonight. It’s bin day tomorrow.
Go and annoy Jim Carroll with your opinions.
*Anyone found any nice opals lately? Or how about beer? What’s with only serving Carlsberg and Budweiser on draught in Crawdaddy anyway?

Big fan of The Script, eh?
Good to see Hot Press supporting Irish music as always by giving this Prize huge coverage
Oh, hold on a minute…..
Moriarty, you anonymous cur, the Choice Prize is not a definition of Irish music.
Nay (sic)
How can I be anonymous when I give my name and email address, you tulip?
And please answer the question – why does Hot Press continue to blank Irish music and events like this?
Ah, in fairness to HP, they did a four page spread on the Choice Prize in their last edition, no?
Repackaged reviews because they got HMV to spend some euros
I’m waiting for this blog writer to answer the question posed above (and hopefully stop calling her readers “curs”)
MM – you are a cur. Your email address does not exist, a fact that came to light when I tried to mail you a few weeks ago to explain moving a comment to a different section.
My affiliation with Hot Press is this blog and nothing else. I don’t work for them in any other capacity and have no input towards the magazine’s editorial decisions. Try to keep in mind also that this is a weblog – one person’s views and opinions on developments in a certain field. It’s not its own authoritative entity, it’s not a public forum speaking for anyone other than my own day-to-day musings on the Irish music circuit. Blogging is just that…snippets and posts. It’s certainly not a serious forensic examination of the defining standards of our music industry.
Oooh…tetchy
Uhm, my email is working fine. Please re-send

Are you satisfied with that or is further elaboration in order?
Maybe the server went on strike?
Yeah the legal system fails at every turn. That was generated at 16:58 today. So the server conveniently strikes each time I attempt to reach that email?
Anonymous posting is for losers and completely negates any worth of opinion, especially if they’re going to lurk on someone’s blog and only comment negatively.
Seriously MM, if you consider this blog an extension of Hot Press, why do you make the accusation of neglible Irish music event coverage when there are almost 60 posts regarding similar Competitions, 44 festival-related and almost 350 relating to unsigned music alone?
If your accusation is levelled at the magazine rather than this website then why ask me? Why not write to the editor with your opinion? I’ve made the point before that Hot Press are open to objective criticism of a fair nature. That’s cool and something we can all do with as opposed to anonymous online bitching that serves no purpose. If you’re a reader, your opinion is important. If you’re not, why do you even care?
And just in case you’d like to cite my own bitching regarding this award, keep in mind that I voiced my opinion under my own name and gave reasons and examples of what I felt was lacking.
You learn him Nay…
Have to say I was happy with the shortlist (with a few exceptions). I still believe MJEX was album of the year (but I know its not for everyones tastes) but thought R.S.A.G. would sneak it in the end (amazing performance as always from him last night), but Jape was a very deserving winner in the end…..and received a huge response when he won.
Overall a great night and a shame you didn’t go Nay. But I know you feel a bit passionate about the whole affair which is something we will have to disagree on.
And none of the performances were anywhere near boring!
A deserved win for the nicest man in Irish music. If it was down to live performance RSAG would’ve walked it – still shaking my head in disbelief at his performance.
Aaah I’m thrilled for Richie. Of the shortlist he really did make the album which stood out and I had a strong hunch Ireland would become a richier country last night. Chuffed!!
A bit of aggro, thank God. It’s all very pleasant over at OTR. Where’s Michael gone? Come back Micahel! Come on!
Moriarty has fucked over to On The Record to talk shit there because one blog ain’t enough. Gayer.
ah Michael, are u serious? “why does Hot Press continue to blank Irish music and events like this?”
…to be fair, ive been snapping for HP for about 18 months now… and the majority of stuff i get sent to is all Irish acts and events… including last nights Choice Awards.
do a lil research first Mick?… or just read the mag, or the newsdesk posts on the front page which are constantly updated with even the smallest snippet of Irish Music News.
