News : 79 Cortinaz Split

Carlow’s rock trio 79 Cortinaz are parting ways. After a five-year dash which saw their single Deirdre’s Song hit #18 in the Irish charts, numerous festival appearances and 2007’s debut album Hopioki, Gala Hutton, Cormac Strain and Darren (The Count) O’Neill will play a final gig together under the 79Cz mantle this Friday.

Cormac Strain had this to say of the break-up:

It’s official - 79Cortinaz play their last gig, in the current lineup anyway, this Friday night in the Tavern in Carlow.  Admission is free.
It’s almost sad, but at the same time it had to go this way sooner or later and I just kinda went for the sooner. I can’t say the band has disbanded as I really want Gala to forge ahead, but I can say the rhythm section have left and will have a new project with an EP come late spring 2009.

79 Cortinaz formed in 2003 and count working with Rat Scabies (founder ex-member of The Damned) on Hopioki as the utter high of their career. October of this year saw a global album distribution deal with IndieMobile and the announcement of their own label Goggy Records, named after 79Cortinaz guitarist Fergal Barry who tragically passed away in late 2005.

The news of this sudden halt comes as a surprise but reason for the split is the same old, same old: people change direction and move on.

If you’re resident in the radius of Carlow town then go along on Friday and bid adieu to Gala, Cormac and The Count and wish them all the best for 2009. They are such hard-working fellows with so much heart for what they do. I’ll be keeping my eye out for that EP project…

    sorry to hear this,
played gigs with them in previous bands a good few times
and they are standup gents- they also wrote (in my opinion)
one of the coolest songs by an irish unsigned act
‘electric hymn pt1′ which i still listen to with glee

    best of luck lads
