Independent’s Day

Dublin’s first Independent’s Day, a celebration of Irish zine and music culture, takes place this Sunday in the Food Co-Op in Newmarket, D8. Instead of Nightmare Before Christmas at Blachardstown S.C. (robotic reindeer, rampage-inducing jingles and shit chemist gift-wrapping) why not:

Sample the Zine culture: small-circulation magazines published on a voluntary, autonomous basis, zines have long been part of Irish underground community. From the seminal Raw Power of 1977 to today’s Loserdom and The Rag, all aspects of Irish zine creation, agenda, history and production will be on offer on Sunday, ranging from stalls, discussions, workshops and displays.

Catch a feature screening of Roll Up Your Sleeves, Dylan Haskins’ brilliant documentary featuring Heathers, an examinination of the DIY counterculture movement and how Ireland contrasts to other creative communities in Europe.

Fill in the gaps of your record collection as several labels set out their wares: Richter Collective, Rimbaud Records and Stitchy Press will all have stalls so there’ll be nothing to stop you snapping up the new Sea Dog for your bro’s stocking.

Participate in the discussion of Dublin Community Television’s inaugural year as the city’s only community-orientated television network. The station prides itself on zero advertising and a fully co-operative management by its members, supported by Dublin City Council funds. This looks like an interesting debate of Independence between the fiercely-nonaligned zinesters and the DCTV guys.

Find out how Seomra Spraoi are settling into their new social-space home and what’s in store for the centre in the new year. There will also be other social movement groups’ information stalls to browse and chat.

Indulge in hot refreshments from the good people at the Amnesty Freedom Cafe…all in all, beats cardboard cappucino by a tinselled mile!

Independent’s Day, Sunday 7 December at the Dublin Food Co-Op, 12 Newmarket, Dublin 8. Donation: €2.
