News : 4 July
Update on last week’s news of RedKid: Dan the man is back on a drum throne soon! After a nasty fall from his bike Keet has confirmed there’s no serious damage -hooray!- and all will be well for the major haul ahead on the release of their eponymous debut in August (I have my copy: it’s great to be jaywalking to Soup!)
The Minutes really are carrying out their threats of gigs in gaffs…or should that be gigs’n'gaffes? Lock up your ma’s bras and hide the dodgy school photos: Phil Kelly has a teaser….watch out for The Minutes’ WhelansUpstairs residency in the next few weeks:

Aoife McIndieHour has a great new podcast over on her blog, instalment #2 of her new Crash Course series features a discussion on songwriting from Carly Sings, Captain Moonlight, Mumblin’ Deaf Ro and Jinx Lennon.
Cork band Fred spent the last few weeks across the Atlantic performing at NXNE and impressed the Canadian media no end: check out this review of their Toronto show.
Two nominees from the Seven Songs post have collaborated for a special new single: Fee Da Da Dee by The Guggenheim Grotto features guest vocals from Jenny Lindfors. They both rated highly with Matt Lane’s Bambi and Holly Pereira so it will be interesting to see the full-round robin circle of that thread! You can catch TGG between 7-9am when they guest on Ian Dempsey’s TodayFM breakfast show on 9 July.
On the subject of radio, something completely random: Carosel have found themselves the new favourites of digital Japanese station Motionwaves : http://motionwave.tv/music/motionwave-picks/carosel/. How bands get big in Japan seems to be an eternal conundrum but these guys are doing something right! Check out their gorgeous tune Easy As It Flows over on MySpace. You can also catch them live along with Readers’ Wives/Robotnik and everyone’s top tip for 2008 Conor Furlong at 5m2 = Five Metres Squared.
Here’s the latest Zodiac Sessions video featuring delightful tones of Ciara Allen live in Bruxelles:
God, it’s a great year for The Urges: they signed a major label deal and now have the European tour to accompany. Go drool over their MySpace calendar which is packed with dates in the UK, Norway, France and Germany. Thom Yorke will probably instigate an environmental campaign against the amount of shampoo gurgling its way down the drain of the Urgin’ tourin’ bus….
Bad news for Halves and The Jimmy Cake: the Austrian festival Transmission has been cancelled due to budgetary concerns and poor ticket sales. A dayumn shame. Lads, I have a sizeable living room with fabulous acoustics if the itch to perform doesn’t recede. I also whip up a fine turkey in chocolate sauce
Another band playing under the Northern Light rig are Only Fumes and Corpses who visit Finland this month. They join punk luminaries Maradona and Pisschrist at the Puntala Rock festival in Helsinki. Bet you anything architecture is the last thing on their minds…
Big news from Thread Pulls: they’ve posted a new song on MySpace! This IS a big deal. The elusive duo - until recently the only Irish band to play All Tomorrow’s Parties but I believe Gemma Hayes usurped that title- don’t do gigs as a norm and the rare performance for Analog in support of their label 9pt Records later this month is almost a once-off… August might see the band make the anti-move of not releasing any tunes at all so a speedy reconnoitrez at their page is reccomended, like, now.
How cool is thisredbook? Not content with whipping up a fabulous Halves vid, Rojo has brilliant shots of Cars In Walls from June’s ClubAC30 in Whelans. You’ll be forgiven for window-licking.
Storming the download charts with a new single are Floyd Soul and the Wolf . Titled Give It A Chance, the Student Band of 2008 strengthens its howl-d upon the music scene with the snappy appeal of this rocking number, on the digital shelves now.
Easing it up a notch after last weekend’s laste-night-lashin’ at Crawdaddy are House of Dolls who go from supporting The Urges to headlining Radiator at The Hub this Friday. The foursome are firm favourites of Sweet Jane, who came to watch them at Pogo and fecked off before The Urges. Their loss ![]()
Also on the bill are The Blonde Majority and Ugly Megan with Rennie and the Heartburns.

In a twist of fate the Rennies also open the third Citizen at Eamon Dorans on Saturday with Minor Detail and headliners The Eclectic. For the record, Citizen is now legal. Back in 2006 one petulant Temple Bar promoter was so incensed that the first event outsold his established clubnight, he dobbed-in Citizen’s then 15-year old organiser and had him barred from his own gig. Bring your passport, just in case!

“Everyone’s top tip for 2008″? Really?!
Thank you, Naomi! You’ve no idea how lovely it is to read that. All artists need encouragement.

Sure, it’s nice to be nice. I need Fernando Torres and sheets made of Spanish jerseys but alas, the niceties don’t extend so far. I live in hope
