Seven Songs
I was tagged by Adam in this blogathon: name seven songs you’ve been listening to and tag another seven people to participate.
I’m not sure if I know seven people who like music. Hrrmm…
Car Park - Butterfly Explosion
Last week’s untimely news that Butterfly Explosion as we know it is no more, I’ve been giving them a fair oul’ bash on the iPod. Oh-so-unhurried in its build-up, Car Park remains my favourite track. If sugar had a sound, this would be it.
Phil Lynott - Jape
“Jape’s new album is a little slice of Heaven” said my friends and they were right. I picked the album up last week and it’s barely stopped. While I’m not so much an acoustic fan, I looove this little number about a the shadow of lunar eclipse like Philo’s sleepy eye looking over the rockers of Dublin. Beautiful homage to a true Dub legend.
Drone Rock - SuperExtraBonusParty
Yep, I’ve played the album to within an inch of its life and yet it shows no sign of losing appeal. While Propellor is my favourite tune, I love the tribal tones in this number building hypnotically before accelerating into signature SEBP mayhem. Should be a permanent fixture on any Irish DJ set.
Summer Broke My Spine - Waiting Room
This Dublin band parted ways a few months ago and released their debut album shortly afterwards. Graceful and tranquil, this haunting melody may well be first on my playlist when heading home from a weekend of wading through Oxegen mud: it’s perfect for staring into inky night with a happy head and heavy heart.
Lost Now - Dry County
Who doesn’t love Dry County? Though a while since its release, I still find my clicking button drawn to these songs and Lost Now is one flawless slice of Irish electronica that never fails to raise spirit and smiles on my account. Cheeeeck their “last ever”* gig at Whelans this Thursday.
Are We Winners - New Amusement
One of my favourite bands at the moment, New Amusement released this beauty of a song on their ambitious mini-album Any Port in a Storm. With underlying Eighties romance and the twangy sound of new indie, it puts me in a great mood.
Seven - We Are Knives
“beeepbeeepbeeep”…make way for the cement truck, folks! Driven by Belfast trio WAK, Ireland’s rock foundations are ready to be laid by the latest musical-masons to emerge from the North. Seven features on their searing six-track debut and I’ve been in raptures. While my heart belongs to ASIWYFA, I might just cheat and kiss these songs to death.
* So they say. Despite this Drop-D article hinting at a new album, rumour is rife that DC are up to something. I think a cigar factory in the Honduras or perhaps the new in-house singing barmen at the Bernard Shaw…sure, why not?!
In keeping with the MeMe, I hereby tag seven Irish bands:

June 24th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
I dont really like music, but heres 7 songs that have been ratteling my eardrums recently!!
1) Kick In The Face - Neon Stars
Love this tune, a great band from that scarily brilliant breeding ground for bands that is Tallafornia, I dunno, but there has to be something in the water out there…. great band, savage tune by them aswell… allways gets me going at a gig, its hooktacular…. (when your volcabulary cant cut it, invent a word) a band that should be bigger than they are…. this song is destined for indie dancehall greatness!!!
2) Minsk - Concerto For Constantine
Seen em play this on the 2fm 2moro 2our last year, and my favourite song of what was a great set had to be this intense little number “Minsk”, Im constantly listening to it at the moment, one of the best Irish bands Ive heard in a long time, possibly cause its a composite of loads of Irish bands from the past, JJ72, Turn and Binzer whos drummed for everyone.. check this track out, its incredibly ballsy and has to be played very loud
3) Shes So Modern - Delorentos
Ah, Ya gotta love the Delorentos, and this song is one of my favourites… ony actualy got the ep recently so Im allwas listening to it at the moment!!
4) Bite The Bullet - The Kinetiks
Heres another geat band aswell…..
Its kinds amazing to think of how many fantasitc bands there are in the country at the moment!! This their most recent single I think is fantastic… Hurry up and release an album lads!!
5) Wonderful Wizard - The Guggenheim Grotto
Seen these lads at the weekend…… love this tune, the haromonies are amazing, and its a great tune aswell….. Im looking 4ward to hearing their new album aswell which is supposidly due out soon!!
6) Half In Love With Elizabeth - Mystery Jets
Heres a fantastic slice of indie briliance from the Mystery Jets new album Twentyone…. Love this tune….. Very rarely does an album come out that I get excited by anymore, but this one is great, full of great tunes.. and Half In Love With Elizabeth has to be a single at some point!! Tis Great
7) Gone To Sea - New Amusement
Seen these lads a couple of weeks ago in the button factory, at the time I recognised the name but wasnt too familiar with them… gettin loads of airplay on Phantom atm and I knew a load of their songs,I thought they were great, great happy music…. cheers me up when I listen too their mini album thing…. I predict big things for these lads
Now In Keeping With the Tradition…..

this is just a note to remind myself to remember
June 25th, 2008 at 9:14 am
Dry County last gig ever?
Is this true? I’d heard they were taking a year out… I’d be very sad to see this band finish, one of the greatest acts in the country
June 25th, 2008 at 11:07 am
- Bambi : Wahey, it’s on! Nice one choosing so much Irish too! Isn’t Minsk a belter of a tune? I know where you’re coming from on the past history too, it’s so edifying to see succesful projects on the back of established reputations in a different type of band, I like the versatility CFC have in melding the darker aspects of Turn with JJ72’s brilliance…
The Kinetiks rock…Gaz has his frontman down pat. I’d like to see another EP before an album though, there’s so much mileage in the band for unique pop songs.
- Rojo : Thanks! I wonder what a Leitrim Onion tastes like!
- Cormac : a fine philosophy sir. I leave a trail of pencilled pastel paper everywhere I go :p
- Flynnduism : If you believe the hype
June 25th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
[…] is rife. As reported, hints suggest tomorrow night’s ClubAC30 gig with The Eclectic and Cars In Walls at Whelans […]
June 25th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Ok so, since you already nicked one of mine (Jape, phill Lynott) and since I just got my MP3 player robbed last thursday (not funny, ever), its gonna be tricky, but I’ll give it a go -
Christopher and Anthony - Jape
I know Nay already said Phill Lynott, but this tune just rocks. I’ve been playing it non stop since it came out, and the album just gets better and better, but this song is a fantastic opener. Kinda David Kitt meets Hot Chip at a Chalets gig.
I like music - Republic of Loose
Our manager Paul got me into ‘de loose’ and I love this new single. My missus heard it on Phantom and came home sayin to me “Why does he say moosic” I’ve no idea, but it’s funky ass all the same.
Save Button - Cathy Davey
This is off Ms Davey’s first album, Something Ilk, which is an absolute cracker and deserved to sell a ton. I just love the idea of a song about trying to save a song and your machine wipes it. It’s a beautiful melody too. I absolutely love Cathy Davey, and I had the pleasure to interview her once at Oxygen when I was a DJ, and she was a legend. She’s also recorded with Elbow (grace under pressure live at Glastonbury) so I am humbled in her presence.
Sucker Punch -Walter Mitty and the Realists
The lads from Walter Mitty are mates of ours, and we’ve gigged together loads. The first time we played they stood in for another band who couldn’t make it, and jesus they rocked. We’ve all been good mates since then. This is one of my favourite tunes of theirs,I love the lyrics and the chorus line is catchy as fuck, but to be honest, I could’ve picked any of their tunes -check out myspace.com/waltermittyandtherealists
Solid Gold - The Hot Sprockets
If you haven’t heard of these boys you’ve gotta check em out. They win my vote for best dressed Dublin band, just because there’s no way they could be anything else except a band. I abolsutely love the guitar riff in this tune, and it just sounds so country dirt, which is how the boys describe their music. They have a knack of writing songs that sound instantly familiar, which is why they’re gonna be hoooj. Their site is myspace.com/thehotsprockets
This is what you do - Gemma Hayes
Ok, I have to be honest here, I’m kind of secretly in love with Gemma Hayes, but in fairness, what Irish musician isn’t. Uber talented, the sexiest voice this side of the Atlantic, and a beautiful lookin lady to boot. Come on. I love this song, it’s a beautiful opener and I love the way it ebbs and flows, then builds to a gorgeous trance like ending. The whole album is mighty fine stuff too, specially ‘in over my head’. Love it.
Lovers of Life - Star Little Thing-
So, this was the last thing I listened to on my MP3 player when it got robbed. I love this tune (I know, I know, it’s the Heineken ad, but who cares) The first time I heard it it grabbed me, but I didn’t know who the band was (note to Phantom DJs, some people are waiting to hear the name of the band) It’s just such an upbeat good time tune, and it never fails to put a smile on my face. It took me ages to hunt it down, but once I got it I couldn’t believe that it was an Irish band. There new album’s out now too.
Ok, so now I get to tag 7 Irish bands?
-The Delorentos
-The Amazing Few
-Warm Wax
-Leanne Harte
-Holly Pereira and the Latter Day Saints
-Walter Mitty and the Realists
-Ebo
See ya Friday Nay!
June 25th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Oh no, I never said Nina Hynes!!!! That’s probably because I’ve been listening to her whole album non stop for the last 2 months.
Ok, its www.myspace.com/ninahynesandthehusbands.
The album Really Really Do is just amazing, please check it out, cos its actually quite special.

June 25th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Dayum, I’ve been meaning to buy Really Really Do for aaaaages. There goes another pastel note!
A really round selection of rock and pop like the Hot Sprocks, I haven’t seen them in a while now but miss the cheery smiles!
Funny how you mentioned the SLT song being used for Heino so…defensively! Do you think there’s a stigma associated with songs being used as adverts?
Your bands sound like next year’s Childline
Paul told me Age is back on his dummer’s throne
I like your nominations too… be sure to let them know they’re chosen, now!
June 25th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Hi all,
Just seven tracks??? Thats tough but I’ll give it a shot.
1.Cowboy x - Gabbi
This band are nothing short of sheer class!!! This song in perticular is not only an irish favorite but just a favorite song in general. A mix between Garbage and supersprode, Which happen to be bands I love also, so a mix between the two is a treat
2. BATS - E.P
sorry I know this says TRACKS but I dont have the EP case with me so I dont know the track names but lets just say track 2 is amazing, these guys are really pushing the envelope for me. Not only are the structures and tones starnge, the songs are hauntingly errie. Your brain begs you to listen on to see what the crazy S.O.B’s are going to do next, Its like the crystal maze of Irish music……..
3.LITTLE NIGHTMARE - CHASE MUSIC
Ok……..How this band aren’t mega stars already is beyond me, They have it all. This song is still for me there best work to date but thats not to say that there last EP wasn’t good cause it was fantastic. Chase music is an epic piece of wizardary……….You haven’t heard it??? GO DO IT NOW!!!
www.myspace.com/littlenightmaremusic
4. NOISE CONTROL - STEEL
Heard bout these guys a while ago, Was amazed by what they were doing, I had to go and see if they could pull it off live and man was I impressed. They Nailed the crowd to the back wall with there blistering show and everyone still wanted more. I am now a dedicated fan and I really cant wait for the album.
5. A NAME TO KILL FOR - THE ARGUMENT
This track is one of my all time favorite tracks, Its a progressive track and works into itself which takes a good 8 minutes, but….BUT…….They are 8 mins that pass with ease and you will find yourself putting the track on repeat……not many bands can pull a trick like that off
6. LLUTHER - PEOPLE IS UGLY
Amazing industral guitar riffs, Great vocals remminisant of NIN and as an over all pakage this band have what it takes to take it international. Haven’t seen them live but I can say that I definatly wouldn’t hesitate to buy a ticket
7. DAMIEN RICE - DELICATE
I could sit and listen to this guy all day……….Summers day, lying in a field, Freezing cold bottel of bulmers and a straw hat…….Thats what this song is for me. In a country awash with singer song writers, I really do think this guy is the cream of the crop
Ok so thats a dop in the buket of the acts and songs I like but my choices were based on what I have listened to in the last 2 days
I TAG………………………….
1.DIRTY EPICS
2.LITTLE NIGHTMARE
3.EBO
4.BABY JENX
5.WASTED CASE
6.MENDOZA
7.STORY OF HAIR
June 25th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
I’ve told all my nominees to get their asses in gear, just got a call from Kieran Amazing askin me what the hell he has to do, so I’m gonna go tell him now.
I wasn’t being defensive bout the SLT track, its just that its a bit obvious pickin a tune thats on the telly ALL THE TIME! We sold our soul to the advert demon long ago so I’ve no bother with it if it keeps the wolf from the door and feeds the creative wage bill…but Jack Black and Coke, that’s just rippin the piss.
By the sound of it Age is back to his quality best I’m delighted to hear. Can’t wait to see them boys live again, its been about a month, I need my Sprocket fix. I’d love if my selection was next year’s Childline, I’d be there in a flash!
Later aligator
June 25th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Alright, cheers Keet for tagging us. ok this is a tough one but here we go
1. Jenny Lindfors
As disgusted as I am that she is the same age as me but really accomplished and productive, I have to include her cos she rocks. She’s got a gorgeous, strong voice, like a vat of iron-enriched honey (that’s a compliment). It’s a toss up between 2×1 and Nighttime.
2. Charlotte Hatherley
Roll Over (Let It Go)
Off last year’s The Deep Blue, this album was a slow burner for me. But once you get into it, Christ! Amazing. This song has fantastic vocal harmonies and a healthy dose of sarcastic griping¦ perfect for an oul griper like me
3. The Mighty Stef
Sainte Catherine
A song with brassy sailors and sassy saints, what else could you want?! Makes you want to grab a bottle of hooch and a honky-tonk pianer. Never seen him live but it’s a goal.
4. The McGetigans
I Miss You
This song is the $#*t. The McGetigans, from what I gather, are a trio of goats from Donegal.
‘I dress you up like Little Bo’ Peep but you say that I’m creepy’
I’m listening to it right now, I would quote the whole lot if I my little hands could type fast enough. Check them out! www.myspace.com/mcgetigans.
5. The Style Council
The Paris Match
When I was writing this list I was aware that this might be a proverbial yardstick of cool: unfortunately I am terminally uncool so I have to include the Style Council. They rock. They cheese. In fact, the cheesier they go, the better. They have a song called Blood Sports, one of the lines is
‘Who gets a hard on with blood upon his hands’
(written before Paul Weller renounced vegetarianism)
However, the song I am listening to at the moment is The Paris Match. So melodramatic, so regretful. All the stuff that sad songs should be. The fact that the last chorus is in bad French is just the icing on this tragic cheesecake.
6. Nouvelle Vague
O Pamela
Since we’re talking sad and depressing, this song fits the bill nicely. It’s off the second album, Bande A Parte and is a cover of The Wake song. I went through a month of listening to it every day, telling anyone who would listen ‘I’m as cold as December, maybe twice as cold’. I don’t know why, it was May; it’s just a deadly line.
7. The Dominoes
Sixty Minute Man
This is a rockin tune! My mate Daz told me bout it last month. Way kinkier than a lot of the (apparently) more homogenous rock and roll of the time. Hilarious!! It gives instructions on how to get it on with the ladies! Interesting last 15 minutes too!
So that’s my playlist at the moment. My Seven Deadly Irish Tagees are:
1. One Hand on the Bottle (This is a cheeky plug cos they sometimes let me destroy my guitar with them but they’ve just recorded their album and it rocks, check out Coffee)
2. Legion of Ape
3. Blind Yackety/ Kevin Mc Namara
4. Attention Bebe
5. The Amazing Few
6. Madame Zhou
7. Tara Lee
June 25th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
hey keet sorry u put up the very popular Amazing Few too…im blind. can i put add another in….?!?!
ERA VULGARIS are progressive metal and deadly.
June 26th, 2008 at 11:44 am
Keet : yep, you guys have had songs on tv before, right? That’s why I thought it was interesting. There shouldn’t be a demon connected with advertising, I always think it’s a great boost for new bands to know they’re being recognised above and beyond venues. Though admittedly there are cases of a ‘telly-band’ with one or two decent songs finding themselves thrust into the limelight with very little to back them up!
Hey Lar
The second song on BATS’ EP is These Ones Lay Eggs and ayuh, you’re right, they’re inzany! That has gotta be one of the bounciest intros ever!
Lluther are doing really well in Europe, they tour quite a lot and have a growing fanbase…(I interviewed them on the differences of performing in Ireland and on the continent, here:
http://wordpress.hotpress.com/offherrocker/2007/11/28/i-still-have-a-suitcase-in-berlin/)
Isn’t it cool how each list has shows the little aspects of peoples’ tastes? Damien Rice and Noise Control on the same bill is pretty eclectic
Hey Holly
Nice list
It’s cool you mention Jenny Lindfors, I’d feel the same in your shoes!
The Nouvelle Vague album is brill, too, I picked it up without realising they were cover versions and started getting very indignant three songs in! They’re great covers though!
Gotta say, I’m also loving the amount of new bands and artists popping up… MUST go and check out Blind Yackety now, LOL!
June 26th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Nay: CFC are insanely brilliant, one of the loudest bands Ive ever seen, and yeah, they do kinda combine the brlliance of JJ and the darker sde of Turn to form their own briliant sound…. and they dont really sound like any of the individual members previous bands, which I was actually a bit surprsed by, JJ dd have occasional heavy moments, but not on the same grand scale of Concerto, but I really couldnt have said it better, In my opinion, The Sum is greater than its parts in this case, I wonder does anyone agree with me, and I was a big JJ fan back in the day…. and ya cant beat a bit of Turn, I wish I knew who borrowed that album off me, hmmmm
And The Kinetics, Id really just love to see more from em aswell… Id love something more substantial like an album from em, but anything new from them would be cool as each release gets better and better, how fantastic is Bite The Bullet??….. my only regret is I cant go see em and the Delos in The Academy 2moro…. stupid job
Theres a tonne of fantastic Irish bands at the moment, I cant wait for the HWCH festiva this year, it makes seeing all these new bands so much easier, I really hope Dry County dont call it a day tho, heres hoping they are just hiding themselves away in the studio, I wanna hear more from those lads cause they are one of the most unique bands Ive ever seen, but as for the many bands that have thusfar been mentionedm keep up the fantastic work, its great to see so much great music coming from this little country of ours!!
Sorry…..
Im after getting all Patriotic on yas
