Poll : Which Band Live?
So far this year I have some favourite performances: The Wiggers’ Brawl in January, SEBP in Whelans, Roisin Murphy at Choice Prize in February, Butterfly Explosion and Subplots at AC30 in March…I can keep going!
Though there’s something on every weekend, a few names have held tight on the live circuit: the bands I want to but haven’t yet snapped are BATS, Fight Like Apes and You’re Only Massive. As the mortality rate for Irish bands is very low in comparision to the healthy birthpool of new contenders I never worry too much about missing gigs because they’ll always be back soon. So these three are top of my to-do list. However I want to know what you think. What are your favourite gigs so far in 2008? Who have you missed and can’t wait to see? Have there been let-downs or unexpected surprises? Who you think will be rocking the bigtops scene, summer 2009? Just curious…

La Rocca in Crawdaddy were great you should get to them next time they’re in town.

I think that was the night of the Irish Blog Awards! The one I didn’t get to because the universe once again threw a spanner in the works! Defo have to check em out the next time they’re home, the new album’s done and dusted so shouldn’t be too long now…

Hmm, I think that AC30 gig with Butterfly Explosion, Subplots & Lights is up there for me too.
Where did Subplots disappear too? I know they had some kind of launch soon after, but then….nothing??
Gah, I always hate these kinds of lists as It’s always difficult to remember them all, and after I post I’ll straight away think of something else to add :/
So I abstain….eh…other than that I already said the AC30 gig was “up there” I mean….

Would definitley rate: Dark Room Notes, Grand Pocket Orchestra and would think that New Amusement, CODES, Halves and The Kinetiks all have it in them to be massive this time next year.
Fight Like Apes I’ve seen thrice…they’re a very very very tight and unique band.

LOL Andy, I left this window open for 30 mins before posting in case I changed my mind about those three!
Subplots are alive and recording! Their new EP is launched in Whelans on 14 August.
Rob, I’ve never photographed FLA live, I hear floor-space is very very very tight too!
I defo agree that all the bands you mentioned are doing very well: New Amusement are THE hot favourites amongst people I’ve been talking to. Codes and Kinetiks are already on this year’s Oxegen line-up, here’s hoping next year’s the main stage!

I do see what you’re getting at though in terms of who’s next in line for the ‘most likely…’ tag. Wondering are there any tips for some good gigs myself! There’s a band called Lamda playin in The Hub soonish, they supported us a while back, and then I say them in The Bernard Shaw a few months ago and they’re improving all the time, very interesting sound and great live energy…Myspace page isn’t much to go by, but I think they’re gearing up for a release of some sort (could be wrong though!) That’s all I got at the mo!

It’s actually spelt Lambda and they’re in the Hub June 20th it seems…just checked there.

I’ve passed up several opportunities to see FLA. I don’t know why, I’m just never in the mood, even though I loved both their EPs. I would love love love to see Bats though- I missed their EP launch before Christmas and really wish I’d been along.
I’m checking out Tidal District’s EP launch the week after next. Not much else on the gig front I’m afraid.
