News n Etc

Firstly, congratulations to Niamh Farrell and Derek Byrne on the birth of baby Oscar! HP were first to report the news and well-wishes have been pouring in for Ham Sandwich’s Niamh and Autumn Owls‘ guitarist Derek who met last year. Saturday night’s Hambo gig in Mayo was cancelled due to ‘illness’ on Niamh’s part but faced with the news of little O’s birth on Sunday, I’m sure there’s a welcome return on the cards. Best of luck to the new family…let’s hope a chaperone accompanies Podge, Olly, Darcy and John when babygro shopping for the latest addition!
Kudos to The Red Labels who’ve just been confirmed for Oxegen!
The Kinetiks are very, very pleased to announce their inclusion on the bill for Punchestown 2008 as well. There’s a packed schedule to get through first including BalconyTV Awards and a special support with The Gorgeous Colours to Delorentos in the Academy on 27 June. It’s been non-stop with a steady slog through a gruelling schedule since their debut EP High Horse Olympics and Shuffle Your Feet/Bite The Bullet singles were released last year after the runaway success of Cop Yourself On.
Also confirmed for Oxegen are the deadly Codes who’ll play the IMRO New Sounds Stage (though there’s no official mention or line-up for this stage on the web yet, booo!) at 9ish on the Saturday night. What a slot! If you’re an avid follower you’ll know that they play their biggest gig to date on 5 July at the Academy with awesome support from Tidal District and Lights. They’re offering tickets to be won but only in return for some noggin-bustin fun: more info regarding the comp and this image is posted on their MySpace blog. Give it a bash!

(Codes, The Kinetiks and Ham Sandwich all play PhantomFM’s Longest Day on 21 June.)
If you’re a Fight Like Apes fan get your first listen of new single Something Global on Nialler9’s blog. He’s got all the info, a streaming preview and Loreana Rushe’s cover art. It’s looking damn good on the Apes’ MySpace too with an all-new selection on the music player and a UK tour on their calendar for the next month.
Distractors are very happy today: they’re away to Belfast to record a session for ATL which will also broadcast on Dan Hegarty’s 2fm show and BBC Radio 1! Let the hollerin’ commence…
Hassle Merchants got up to their usual bold tricks over the weekend, earning themselves a ban from Eamonn Dorans, a tad bothersome considering their debut single The Indie War is/was due to be launched at the venue on Saturday night.
“BOTHER?!” I hear the Merchants cry, “NAY!”
More hassle, no trouble? Indeed: the previous plan was to charge €10 admission into Dorans. Now the gig (featuring Sickboy and The Hot Sprockets amongst others) will go ahead gratis (FREE) at the Bernard Shaw on Saturday. Check out this post for flyer/vid/free download of Felix Comes A-Lickin’…
Here’s a very short vid of BATS in Eamonn Dorans on Thursday supporting Horse:
Noise Control like music (and pizza, whiskey, garish hoodies, LedZep and black coffee) and remixes. An awful lot in fact: already boasting LeBien and Star Little Thing in their back catalogue, now they have a brand-new mix of We Like Music from Arron Faye. Get your head round it on their MySpace player.
Also with new songage are: RedBrickHouse and Carosel. I really love the sweet jazz tinge of Carosel’s new single Easy as it Flows, out next month.

Grand Pocket Orchestra play the Bernard Shaw tonight. Free. And they’re deeeadly. Go!

I met baby Oscar on Monday. He was literally only the size of me hand, 5lb 3oz or something! Cute little dude, sure to be a rocker!
