I took these photos of Floyd Soul and the Wolf in Dublin, a few days after the Galway heats of the NSMAs when they were headlined the City Fest alongside Hassle Merchants and The Urges. Voodoo lounge is the sex of Dublin Pubs, dark, dirt and danger accentuated by bedsheets and fairy lights in the upper tier, courtesy of McGruders’ representatives from Free Gaff fraternity across the quays.
It was good fun bossing these lads about and chatting to break the ice. Situations were technically awful for a photoshoot: we’d never met before, the bar was full of people and lights were bloody non-existent.
They’re only young and meek enough, like their many counterparts on the student bands scene but there aren’t many bands I could place in Voodoo and photograph convincingly. Floyd Soul and the Wolf are all about life as hard-wearing as denim and songs to do shots to, kicking up a storm of lyrics and big ideas.
So it was was fun to work with the idea of a disorientated shooting mode, slowing shutter to blur light and of course trusty fish-eye, guaranteed to make your head reel…

Four shoots before lunchtime…better run!

You just cannot argue with fish-eye.
A punk staple and a classic.
    They look moody!

Ah they were lambkins, very nice lads to work with considering their snapper was clambering over furniture!

It’s fun to mess around but hard to get A1 pics in crap light. I was thinking earlier about the fisheye and effects in music photography over the years. All the bad boys had the saturated, shocking record covers. The Sex Pistols surely paved the way for Banksy…maybe we’ll find a Fortycoats spray-painted with a Floyd Soul Wolf :p
