SuperExtraBonusPhotos!
Well, I hope you went to SuperExtraBonusParty at Whelans on Saturday cos there’s no way you’ll get into Heaven otherwise. They. Were. Divine!
There were looooads of photographers there, squished in amongst the discarded t-shirts, pint glasses and elbows. Check out Niall’s blog for videos nd photos from Dolan….
Already having fairly recent SEBP pics from Crawdaddy in November I decided to go a little crazy on Saturday night. There’s an energy and exuberance in their music, particularly personified in Everything Flows and I hoped to capture that by tuning the camera to an off-beat setting. Normally gig photos need a high shutter speed to snap movement without blur whilst the aperture opens to its widest in order to allow more light to enter the cam in that short time.
Slow-sync flash isn’t gonna set the world alight anytime soon: the neon ‘blurnt’ is beautiful but rather commonplace in gig-photos where the lighting’s dim. Black and white pictures have been around since the beginning of photography itself and it was the grainy monochrome quality of an underground gig I wanted to capture here, with the added modernity of slow-flash flare. What do you think?
And as usual, waaaaaaaaay too many photos. These are my favourite out of hundreds…

Do let me know your thoughts. Do you like the B&W or should I have stuck to the old tried-and-trusted formula? Do you think I’ve captured any essence of a live performance? Were you at the gig? Would you have liked to go? Do Chewits beat Wham! bars? …Whaddeva, hollah!

Hi Nay,
I think a Bonus Party show is about colour and energy and shooting in B+W takes away from that a little bit. Nice though!

You’re right yanno! There really is so much colour emanating from the stage at their shows…but it’s not colour from light-rigs or neon shoelaces, it’s aural colour flowing in music and body rhythm and creativity. They’re the perfect band to experiment to!
I could line SEBP in a row and shoot them on sepia plates and still find the film blistered…
I think you just love your colours :p
