2008: The Beat Goes On
Hot Sprockets drummer Adrian ‘Age’ Kelly was involved in a serious accident shortly before Christmas and spent the holidays in hospital. Things looked aptly hairy for a bit but thankfully he’s now on the mend in Beaumont.

Goodwill may now be seasonally unfashionable but it’s unlikely plaid-clad Sprockets will hold it against their friends, who’ve banded together in the shape of a fundraiser for Age at The Hub tonight. Steel-strings and swagger from The Hot Sprockets themselves, The Zealots and Hassle Merchants, acoustic sets from Mainline and Sweet Jane promise chaos taken to new heights courtesy of DJs from Antics, Chemistry and Trashed. If your plan for bands in 2008 is to start as you mean to go on, this gig should be a speedball…and for a good cause, too!
If Temple Bar’s out of your way, Team Fresh, Panama Kings, Bulbous Head and Axis Of are getting fired up for a humdinger show at McLaughlin’s in Portrush tonight. Wigger’s Brawl says it all: I’ve seen tamer line-ups in a copshop.

Get along to the Roisin Dubh in Galway for a free gig from Kill City Defectors on Saturday 5th if you’re up for a riot. Unless the spate of Monty Python on the New Year tv schedule left you with a hunger for something completely different: Nashville singer-songwriter Kevin Montgomery rolls into Limerick town for a Saturday night show at Dolans’ Warehouse.
Back in Dublin at the BoomBoom Room tomorrow night, LPX will launch his new EP Seventeen, follow-up to Experiments In Dub & Hi-Fi, one of my favourite 2007 releases. Support comes in the shape of Brian Cullen’s Love Bullets and the Yeh Deadlies. Leigh is one of those generous souls who loves to give his music away free: 100 copies of the EP will be available for the first arrivals at the venue. But there’s more! Seventeen’s title track is available as a free download from his MySpace.

Sharing the bill with good friends The Chapters, The Village on December 29 saw The Minutes premiere their video to Ukraine, one of 2007’s signature unsigned tunes. A debut EP is expected by spring, naturally followed with a glut of gigs. In the meantime, Toni Ireton has pics from The Village over on her blog.
Also preparing an EP are MayKapes’ favourite band, GrandPocketOrchestra. The self-titled debut will go out on Fifa Records on February 1st, be snapped up in droves, crammed on to playlists and become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Stagger Lee have announced a plethora of live dates in the new year to counter the drought of recent months. Most notable of these look to be supporting The Von BondiesFight Like Apes in Belfast and Dublin mid-February, followed by Murphy’s Live Dublin heat at Crawdaddy on March 6th.
Supporting BRMC throughout 2007 put Mainline in a good mood: they’ve posted two free songs, Sometimes and Bounty for Dead Mainline to download for MySpacers.
Farewell wishes to Longford dreamers Glenwash, who announced a split via their MySpace blog this week. Bottle of Cop, their first EP, recieved glowing reviews which led to slots with HWCH and IMRO. SIX songs are available to download if you’re feeling clicky: they were predicted hot to watch for 2007. Away with them to the chocolate teapot of not-to-be…best of luck for future endeavours, gents.
