Eat yourself Horny

Theres’s definately in a pun in there, but… on to more serious things!

Dr Lynn Edlen-Nezin co-author of “Great Food, Great Sex: The Three Food Factors for Sexual Fitness” reckons you can eat your way to sexual bliss. Here’s how:

The good doctor recommends foods high in arginine, antioxidants and dark chocolate. Arginine is an amino acid and is necessary to produce nitric oxide, which helps men sustain erections and women to become properly aroused and lubricated. Nuts such as almonds and walnuts and fish such as salmon, cod and halibut are high in arginine. Antioxidants stimulate the sex drive and are found in fruit and vegetables. Eat a good colourful variety to get enough. Finally, the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that women who eat at least one cube of dark chocolate daily have more sexual desire and better overall sexual functioning. Dark chocolate is linked to improved circulation, leading to better sex. Yum, yum.

But wait! That’s not all! According to Dr Hilda Hutcherson, MD and sexologist your supermarket is full of natural aphrodisiacs and you should bear that in mind next time you do the weekly shopping. The food we eat greatly affects our energy levels and a poor diet can dampen your libido or your sexual staying power. She recommends the following food to keep your sexuality in good shape:

Complex carbohydrates: Whole grains, beans and vegetables give you energy for staying power. Wheat germ and whole grains high in vitamin E are essential for sperm and sex hormone production.

Protein: Meat, dairy products, eggs, whole grains, seeds, nuts and beans are necessary for all aspects of sex from desire to performance. A lack of protein in your diet can cause your libido to flag.

Vitamins: Vitamins A, B1, B3, B6, C and folic acid are all important for a healthy sex drive. Supplements are useful but these vitamins can be found in whole grains, eggs, fish, veggies and fruit.

Water: Your muscles and your lungs need to be adequately hydrated to function best during sex. Lack of water can also cause vaginal dryness. A well-hydrated body is more energetic and has better sexual endurance. Eight glasses of water a day is recommended.
