Paraphilia
Also called “deviant” sexual behaviour – basically a sexual preference for things that are considered somewhat out of the ordinary. See Roman Shower below for a good example.

Polyamory
To have relationships with several individuals at once. This is different to cheating as it’s a lifestyle choice and polyamorists are normally open about their behaviour.

Refractory period
Sexual down time – the period after ejaculation in which having another orgasm is difficult or impossible.

Rhythm method
A form of birth control based upon abstaining from sex during a woman’s most fertile time. Not the most reliable form of contraception. Favoured by the Catholic Church.

Roman shower
To vomit on your partner for sexual arousal.

Scat
From scatology – arousal by the using of faeces in foreplay.

Sex flush
AKA sex glow – a reddening of the skin experienced during and after sexual excitement, particularly after orgasm. It’s caused by increased blood flow.

Sexual aversion
Also called erotophobia – an irrational fear of sex.

Slash
Erotic writing featuring well-known characters from television, movies, books etc. The term “slash” comes from the way scenarios are referred to, i.e. “Kirk/Spock” (Kirk-slash-Spock).

Switch
A person willing to be either dominant or submissive in SM.

Tribadism
The rubbing of female genitals against each other for sexual stimulation.

Urophilia
A sexual enjoyment of urine – AKA watersports.

Zoophilia
Another term for bestiality.
